About Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists
The Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists was founded in
1976 by a group of professional African-American journalists to:
-
Encourage and support aspiring black journalists;
-
Recognize and honor outstanding journalistic achievement within the black community;
-
Encourage fair and effective coverage of the black community;
-
Provide information about employment and related opportunities to GSLABJ members;
-
Better acquaint members of the black community with ways to make effective use of the media; and
-
Link journalists and communicators of varied disciplines.
GSLABJ benefits members and the community through:
-
The Minority Journalism Workshop, a free, eight-Saturday program for high-school students and college freshmen led by volunteers from the GSLABJ and featuring a variety of community leaders as guest speakers;
-
Annual scholarships for aspiring college students;
-
Mentoring for students; and
-
Media forums and other events for the public.
